Matching Mango Scions and Rootstocks for grafting, they don't always need to match.
Here are some examples that I took photos of when doing my own grafts. Not all scions have to match the root stocks and vice versa. The first image shows that you can approach graft mango budwood onto the side of a larger root stock or even onto a tree.
The second image is when the scion is larger than the root stock. The key is to match just one side of the cambium perfectly and not to worry about the other side that hangs off.
the third image is when you use a single bud from a mango scion, a scion typically contains about 6-10 buds. In my experience I have a lower rate of success using this tecnique. But in theory you could get 6-10 plants from one piece of budwood. Which is an amazing return on investment.
Hope this visual illustration helps some people when deciding how to graft their mango trees or root stocks.
