FAQ's
Q: What are mango scions and how are they used in grafting?
A: Mango scions are 6-8 inch pieces of stem cut from a mature, fruiting mango tree. Each scion carries the exact genetics of that variety, meaning when you graft it onto a rootstock, the new tree will produce identical fruit. Grafting with scions is the only way to guarantee the mango you grow will match the flavor, size, and quality of the parent tree.
Q: How long will it take for a grafted mango scion to produce fruit?
A: A grafted mango scion usually takes about 2–3 years to begin producing fruit, depending on the variety, rootstock, and growing conditions. Some varieties may fruit sooner, while others take longer, but grafting always speeds up the process compared to growing a mango tree from seed.
Q: When will my order be shipped?
A: We ship out every Monday, if post office is closed, then we ship the following day.
Q: Do you sell orange sherbet mango scions?
A: Yes, orange sherbet is available as a variety option on our Mango Scions page.
Q: Where can I watch a mango grafting video tutorial?
A: We have a in depth video linked here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHU7FA1g25g&t=181s&ab_channel=RarePlantCuttings.
Q: How do you ship scions?
A: Our scions are hand picked in the morning, then cleaned and wrapped in premium parafilm called "Buddy Tape", then shipped all in the same day to ensure high quality fresh scions.
Q: What is the difference between buying a grafted mango tree and grafting your own with scions?
A: Buying a grafted mango tree is convenient, but grafting with scions gives you more control, lower cost, and more variety options. Scions let you graft multiple varieties onto one rootstock, or graft rare varieties not commonly sold as trees. It’s also an excellent way to expand an existing mango collection without having to plant more full-size trees. Sometimes referred to as "top working".
Q: Do your mango scions come from a Florida Licensed Nursery?
A: Yes, all of our mango scions are harvested fresh from our FDACS-licensed nursery in Florida. This ensures you’re receiving healthy, disease-free plant material that meets state agricultural standards. Our licensing also means we can legally and safely ship scions within the United States.
Q: Can you ship to California?
A: Yes, Our plant nursery, Rare Plant Cuttings has all of the necessary certifications to ship both cuttings, mango scions, and plants to California.
Q: What tools do I need to do grafting?
A: At minimum, you’ll need a sharp grafting knife or grafting tool, grafting tape or parafilm to secure the union, and pruning shears to prepare your rootstock. Optional but helpful items include grafting sealant to prevent moisture loss and rubbing alcohol to sterilize your tools between cuts. Using the right tools greatly increases grafting success.
