Ah Ping was developed in Hawaii and named in honor of Mrs. Chun Ah Ping of Mapulehu, Molokai.
The tree grows moderately vigorously with a spreading habit, long internodes, and an open, airy canopy. It is a prolific producer of striking medium-to-large red oval fruit. The flesh is extremely firm yet fiberless, offering a sweet, classic mango flavor with pronounced stone fruit notes. Each fruit contains a monoembryonic, paper-thin seed. Ah Ping trees often produce small mangos with aborted seeds—but these miniature fruits are exceptionally flavorful.
Although not as widely known as it deserves, Ah Ping has become a favorite among those who try it. Its flavor is considered by many to be among the best of the classic mango varieties.
Ah Ping is an early-season mango, typically ripening from May to June, and occasionally as early as April in our region. However, the variety is highly susceptible to bacterial black spot. Additionally, the fruit can be vulnerable to post-harvest anthracnose, making it better suited for areas with lower humidity and less frequent anthracnose pressure.
