Ameeri is an old mango cultivar originating from India that was introduced to Florida in the early 1900s. Once grown to a limited extent in South Florida, it never achieved widespread popularity and gradually disappeared from commercial propagation for reasons that are not well documented. Over time, it became absent from the nursery trade and today survives primarily within germplasm collections in Miami-Dade County. The variety has also been referred to at times as Amini Long, though it should not be confused with Amini, which is a separate and unrelated cultivar.
The fruit are large and elongated with an oval profile and often develop a noticeable red blush as they mature. Flesh color is yellow, firm, and fiberless, surrounding a long monoembryonic seed. Flavor is distinctive and appealing, falling into the Indian/West Indian category, with pronounced resin and spice layered over classic stone fruit notes. In character, Ameeri is often compared to the Step mango, sharing a similarly bold and traditional flavor profile.
Though largely forgotten in cultivation, Ameeri represents an interesting piece of Florida mango history and remains valued by collectors for its quality fruit and unique heritage.
