Angie is a standout mango selection originating from the former Frank Smathers property in Miami, Florida. It is widely believed to be a hybrid of Edward and Carrie, combining some of the most desirable characteristics of both parents. The cultivar gained widespread recognition after being repeatedly selected as a Curator’s Choice at the Fairchild Mango Festival. The name honors Angie Whitman, the wife of renowned rare fruit explorer and collector Bill Whitman.

The fruit closely resembles Edward in appearance, with a similar shape and coloration. It is medium in size with moderately firm texture and smooth, fiberless yellow flesh. Flavor is where Angie truly shines, delivering a profile strongly reminiscent of Carrie, marked by pronounced spice, resin, and stone fruit notes layered over a rich sweetness. The seed is thin and monoembryonic, maximizing usable flesh.

Beyond its eating quality, Angie excels as a landscape and home-garden tree. Growth habit is naturally compact, making it easy to manage even in limited spaces. The tree shows strong resistance to anthracnose, while the fruit itself demonstrates excellent tolerance to anthracnose, bacterial black spot, and fruit rot—traits that are increasingly important as disease pressure rises in Florida. Resistance to powdery mildew is also very good, though foliar scab can occasionally appear in especially humid inland conditions.

As a reliable producer with exceptional disease resistance and outstanding flavor, Angie has earned a reputation as one of the best compact-tree mango varieties available. It serves as an excellent alternative to Carrie or Alphonso for growers seeking similar flavor intensity in a smaller, more manageable tree, and it has become one of the most in-demand cultivars in our collection.
