TOP TIER MANGO ALERT

Bennett Alphonso, originally called Douglas Bennett's Golden Alphonse, is an Indian mango reportedly discovered by a Parsee merchant in the 18th century. By the late 1800s, it was recognized as an Alphonso derivative with larger, more colorful fruit and higher productivity than standard Alphonso in southern India. The fruit were also regarded for their superior flavor. The variety was sent to the United States by Douglas Bennett and introduced to South Florida by the USDA in Miami in 1902, with the first tree planted on the Haden property in Coconut Grove and propagated by George Cellon's nursery.

Bennett Alphonso was one of the few early Indian introductions that performed well in South Florida, though it was not widely propagated and has remained primarily in germplasm collections in Miami-Dade County.

The fruit are ovate, closely resembling standard Alphonso, sometimes developing a pinkish-red blush at maturity. Flesh is yellow, fiberless, and soft, with a complex, sweet flavor accented by spice notes. The seed is monoembryonic.

Trees are vigorous growers with narrow leaves compared to regular Alphonso. In South Florida, Bennett Alphonso is classified as a mid-season mango.
