Buttercream is an Edward seedling developed through Gary Zill’s breeding work in Boynton Beach, Florida. While the pollen parent is unknown, the flavor profile points toward an Indochinese-hybrid background, with similarities to Venus and other Zinc descendants, suggesting Zinc as a likely contributor.
The fruit is large and typically remains green at maturity, with an uneven, bumpy surface that can appear unattractive, gradually shifting to a muted yellow as it ripens. Despite its appearance, the eating quality is excellent—rich, smooth, and very sweet. The seed is monoembryonic, and the tree has shown good productivity.
Trees exhibit low vigor with a spreading, open growth habit and an airy canopy, making them well suited for limited-space plantings. Early blooms may produce a high proportion of male flowers, but flowers and fruit have demonstrated good disease tolerance.
Buttercream is considered an early- to mid-season mango in South Florida.
