Candy Corn is a Florida mango cultivar that originated as a chance seedling selected by the Zill High-Performance Plants nursery. It has become known for its unique combination of compact growth and flavorful fruit.
The fruit are medium-sized, slender, and oval, turning yellow at maturity. The flesh is mostly fiber-free and extremely sweet, with an Indochinese-style flavor that has subtle hints of tartness when less ripe. Flavor notes sometimes include mild tropical undertones, giving it a distinctive taste compared with more traditional Florida mangoes. The seed is polyembryonic. Candy Corn fruit generally have a moderate shelf life.
Trees are small to moderately sized with a dwarf, compact growth habit, making them suitable for limited spaces or backyard plantings. Early blooms can produce a high proportion of male flowers, which may affect initial fruit set, but the canopy remains manageable over time.
In Florida, Candy Corn is a mid-season variety, typically ripening in June and July. While detailed disease resistance information is limited, it appears to perform reliably in standard South Florida conditions. The combination of sweet, fiber-free fruit and a compact, easy-to-manage tree makes Candy Corn a popular choice for backyard growers and collectors.
