Dot is a mango selected by the Zill family of Boynton Beach, Florida, and named for Dorothy Zill, mother of Walter, Gary, and Marlys Zill. Pedigree analysis suggests it may be a cross between Zill and Carrie, though it was originally thought to be a Carrie seedling. Dot served as the maternal parent of the Pina Colada mango in Gary Zill’s breeding program.
The fruit are medium-sized, ovate, and yellow at maturity, occasionally showing a pink blush. Flesh is yellow, fiberless, aromatic, and contains a monoembryonic seed. Dot belongs to the classic flavor group, producing rich and robust-tasting fruit.
Trees are moderately to highly vigorous with a spreading, open canopy. They flower regularly and produce consistently but are highly prone to anthracnose and powdery mildew, making them less suited to deep, humid interior areas. Dot displays strong resistance to bacterial black spot and rot.
The fruit ripen early-to-mid season, typically between June and July, with a fairly extended harvest window. For best quality, fruit should be picked as soon as yellow color appears, as leaving them on the tree too long leads to overripeness.
