Dwarf Hawaiian, originally known as “Tete Nene” from Puerto Rico, is likely a Julie seedling. The tree exhibits a compact, dwarfish growth habit with foliage and flavor similar to Julie, requiring minimal pruning when young.
The trees are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, resulting in early flowering in the fall and often multiple bloom cycles in South Florida, allowing the tree to hold several crops per year.
The fruit are small, round, and turn red with minimal sun exposure. The flesh is aromatic with a moderate amount of fiber, delivering a rich, spice-filled flavor balanced with sweetness. The seed is very small and monoembryonic.
The earliest crop ripens in April, with a secondary crop maturing from June to July. Dwarf Hawaiian performs best in coastal areas, as it is susceptible to anthracnose in more humid interior zones. Its compact size, multiple crops, and classic Julie-like flavor have made it a favorite among backyard growers and those seeking a high-quality, manageable mango tree.
