Edward is a Haden seedling, likely a cross between Haden and Philippine-Carabao, developed by Edward Simmonds through USDA hybridization efforts in Miami in the early 20th century. The goal was to combine the rich flavor of Indian-type mangos with the disease resistance of Indochinese-types. Propagation began in the 1940s after David Sturrock described and promoted it.
The fruit is oval, yellow with orange-red blush where sun-exposed. The flesh is fiberless, medium-firm, aromatic, and richly sweet with a hint of acidity. Edward trees are moderately vigorous with dense, thick canopies.
The trees are known for shy bearing but tend to flower easily and consistently. Large trees produce multiple blooms from November onward, giving an extended fruiting season from April to July. Edward remains a favored mango for flavor, with limited commercial scale in Latin America.
