Ewais is an Egyptian mango originating near the Suez Canal, named after an Egyptian minister. The fruit are small, ovate, yellow at maturity, with fiberless flesh that is exceptionally sweet, often surprising those who try it for the first time. The seed is very thin, small, and polyembryonic. While the fruit are highly prone to post-harvest anthracnose, they show good resistance to bacterial spot.
The trees are non-precocious, taking time to start producing, and have a medium vigor upright growth habit with dense canopy. Flowering can be sporadic in South Florida, but when it occurs, the trees set abundant crops of very high-quality fruit. Ewais is a mid-season cultivar, ripening primarily in July. Its growth habit and slower flowering make it a candidate for climates like Southern California, where precocity and humidity-related disease pressure are less of a concern.
Flavor-wise, Ewais fits best in the classic Indian/West Indian group, with its rich, sweet, and aromatic profile reminiscent of traditional Egyptian or South Indian dessert-style mangos.
