Fairchild mango was selected in the Panama Canal Zone in the early 1900s and is thought to be a hybrid between a Saigon-type mango and an Indian variety, likely including Alphonso. The fruit are small, oblong-ovoid, and turn yellow at maturity, with fiberless flesh and a somewhat large seed. The flavor is citrusy with tropical complexity, characteristic of an Indochinese hybrid type.
The trees are low-growing and very manageable, with excellent disease resistance, though stem-end rot can occasionally affect the fruit. Production is fair to good. Fairchild is an early-to-mid season mango in Florida, ripening primarily from June to July. It is an ideal choice for backyard growers seeking a manageable tree with high disease resistance, suitable for smaller spaces and marginal interior or humid locations.
