TOP TIER MANGO ALERT!
Gary is thought to be a cross between Carrie and Pettigrew, selected by the Zill family in Boynton Beach in the 1970s. It is the pollen parent of many of Gary Zill’s hybrids, including Coconut Cream, Pineapple Pleasure, Pina Colada, Seacrest, Orange Essence, Honey Kiss, Cotton Candy, M-4, 40-26, and P-22.
The fruit is small, oval, with soft, fiberless flesh and a distinctive coconut-citrus flavor reminiscent of a Pina Colada, paired with intense sweetness. The seed is polyembryonic. Along the coast, the fruit turns yellow at maturity, while inland it may remain green.
The trees are moderately vigorous with dense canopies. Flowers and young fruit are highly susceptible to fungal diseases, making this variety most suitable for coastal regions. Trees often produce many male flowers, which can limit fruit set, though subsequent blooms tend to set more reliably. Gary shows strong resistance to mango bacterial black spot, a trait passed to most of its progeny, despite being prone to anthracnose and powdery mildew.
