Gopher is a mango selected and propagated by Jenny and David Burd of Naples, FL. The fruit are medium-sized, oval-kidney shaped, developing striking red and yellow skin. The firm, yellow flesh has a medium-bodied Indochinese-hybrid flavor, appealing to those who enjoy complex tropical notes.
The trees are vigorous and upright with an open canopy. Production has been moderate, but the fruit demonstrate high resistance to anthracnose and only moderate susceptibility to rotting fungi. Gopher is a mid-season variety, ripening from late June through July, making it well-suited for growers in humid areas.
