Gouveia is a mango originally from the property of Ruth Gouveia in Palolo Valley, Oahu, Hawaii. It is believed to be a seedling of Pirie, though exact parentage is uncertain due to naming variations with ‘White Piri’ in Hawaii. The variety was named in 1964 and gained attention from horticulturalists in Hawaii during the 1950s, eventually being recommended for home planting in drier areas. The original tree remains standing today.
The fruit are medium-sized, ovoid-ovate, and develop an attractive red blush on the skin. The flesh is yellow, fiberless, and classic in flavor, with a monoembryonic seed. Productivity has proven good, though the fruit can be moderately susceptible to bacterial black spot.
