Haden is a historic Florida mango, originally a seedling of Mulgoba crossed with a Turpentine mango. It was planted by Capt. John Haden in Coconut Grove, FL in 1902 from seeds obtained from Elbridge Gale’s Mulgoba tree in West Palm Beach. The tree first fruited in 1910 and was named by his widow, Florence. Haden became the first widely recognized and commercially successful Florida mango, laying the foundation for many subsequent varieties.
The fruit are medium-sized, round, and develop a striking red blush over a yellow background at maturity. The flesh has a moderate amount of fiber, a sweet classic peachy flavor, and contains a monoembryonic seed. Fruit can be prone to internal breakdown if overripe on the tree and susceptible to post-harvest anthracnose. Haden trees are vigorous with dense, spreading canopies and remain moderately susceptible to bacterial black spot, a trait carried by many of its descendants.
