Irwin is a cross between Lippens and Haden, selected in the 1940s by F.D. Irwin of Miami, FL. It has been introduced internationally, thriving in Australia, South Africa, Taiwan, China, and Japan. In Japan, Irwin mangos are carefully grown for appearance and high market value under names like “Miyazaki” and “Egg of the Sun.” It has also played a role in mango breeding programs in Israel and Taiwan, serving as a parent for several new cultivars.
The trees are low-growing with a spreading habit, producing small-to-medium oval fruit with a striking crimson blush. The flesh is fiberless, soft, and mild, fitting into the classic flavor group. The seed is monoembryonic.
In Florida, Irwin is productive, especially near the coast, though interior plantings can be prone to anthracnose. Fruit are borne in clusters in heavier years. Early-season in nature, Irwin typically ripens from June through July in West Palm Beach.
