Jakarta is believed to be a chance seedling of Kent, selected on the property of the Zill family in Boynton Beach, FL. Bombay may have been a contributing parent based on flavor characteristics. Despite its name, it has no connection to Indonesia. Jakarta was used in the breeding program of Gary Zill and is a parent of selections such as Sunrise, Fruit Cocktail, O-15, and Phoenix.
The fruit are medium-to-large, ovate, and develop an orange-red blush at maturity, with some variability in shape. The flesh is dark yellow, fiberless, and exhibits a sweet, resinous flavor with piney terpenes and spice notes. It is classified in the Indian/West Indian flavor group and contains a monoembryonic seed.
The trees are vigorous growers with upright, open canopies. Fruit set can be inconsistent, particularly in interior Florida, and production may be influenced by cross-pollination and excessive male flower production. Jakarta has a long season in south Florida, typically maturing from late May into July.
