Keitt is believed to be a seedling of Brooks, despite early reports linking it to Mulgoba. It was selected by J.N. Keitt of Homestead, FL in 1945 and quickly gained recognition for its heavy yields and late-season production. It has since become one of the most widely cultivated mangos in the Western Hemisphere, including commercial adoption throughout Latin America.

The fruit are large to very large, sometimes exceeding 3 pounds, ovoid-round in shape. Interior-grown fruit often remain green at maturity, while coastal-grown fruit may develop a light red blush over a golden-yellow background. The flesh is firm with minimal fiber, offering a sweet classic mango flavor with a slight tang. The seed is monoembryonic.

Trees have a spindly, spreading growth habit with moderate vigor, giving them a somewhat “scraggly” appearance. Keitt fruit typically ripen from July through September, with some extending into October, often reflecting the extended bloom period that produces a range of fruit sizes.

The variety is highly susceptible to bacterial black spot and associated rot, which has limited its recommendation for planting in south Florida.
