Kent is a Brooks × Haden seedling originally grown on the property of Leith Kent in Coconut Grove, FL. It gained recognition for its high-quality fruit and strong production traits, leading to widespread commercial planting. Kent is now one of the most widely grown commercial mangos in the Western Hemisphere and is also cultivated in Australia, South Africa, and India. It is a parent of several Florida varieties, including Peach Cobbler, Orange Essence, Gold Nugget, Zill-80, and possibly Jakarta.
The fruit are medium-to-large, typically 1–2 pounds, round in shape, with a yellow background color at maturity and red blush on sun-exposed portions. The flesh is firm, fiberless, and moderately sweet with a peachy note, fitting within the classic flavor group. Fruit can be prone to internal breakdown under wet conditions, and seeds may sprout inside the fruit.
Trees are moderately vigorous with dense, upright canopies and tend to be heavy producers. Disease resistance is limited; anthracnose can affect flowers and fruit, and Kent is highly susceptible to mango bacterial black spot and rot, particularly in humid regions of Florida. Fruit typically ripen from late July through September.
