Madame Francis originates from Haiti and is the most widely grown and commercially important mango in the country, accounting for significant acreage. In international markets—particularly in the United States—it has often been sold simply as the “Haitian mango.”
The fruit are medium-sized, slightly oblong to kidney-shaped, and turn a solid yellow at maturity. Flesh is orange, contains a polyembryonic seed, and has variable fiber content, ranging from minimal to fairly high depending largely on nitrogen levels during growth.
Flavor is best categorized as an Indochinese hybrid type: rich, sweet, and assertive, with mild spice notes and little resin character. It is a bold-flavored mango rather than a mild or neutral one.
Trees are vigorous growers with a vertical, dense, and spreading canopy. Flower anthracnose can be a limiting factor in interior or humid locations, but production is much more reliable in coastal environments. The variety requires minimal stimulus to bloom.
In south Florida, Madame Francis is considered an early-season mango, typically ripening from June through July.
