The Madras mango, commonly associated with Totapuri, originates from South India, particularly the Coromandel Coast region of Tamil Nadu, with historical ties to the area around present-day Chennai (formerly Madras). It has been cultivated for centuries and remains an important variety in both local consumption and regional cuisine.
The fruit is elongated and distinctive, often described as having a parrot-beak shape, which is the basis for the name Totapuri (“parrot face”). Skin color is typically green to yellow at maturity, occasionally showing a light red blush depending on sun exposure. Fruit size is generally medium to large.
The flesh is firm and mostly fiberless, making it well suited for slicing and processing. Flavor is balanced rather than intensely sweet, with noticeable tartness and mild sweetness, which sets it apart from dessert-focused Indian mangos like Alphonso or Kesar. This profile makes it especially popular for culinary uses, including chutneys, pickles, curries, and salads, as well as fresh consumption when fully ripe.
Madras/Totapuri mangos are widely grown across southern India and are valued for their reliable production, versatility, and adaptability rather than for rich sweetness alone. The variety plays a significant role in traditional South Indian food culture and remains a staple mango throughout the region.
