Mallika is a deliberate hybrid mango from India, developed in 1971 at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi. It is a cross between Neelum and Dasheri, two well-known Indian cultivars, created with the goal of improving fruit quality, consistency, and flavor complexity. Unlike many traditional mangoes selected over centuries, Mallika is a modern, intentionally bred cultivar.
The fruit are medium-sized, elongated to oblong, sometimes slightly flattened, and ripen to a bright yellow skin. The flesh is deep orange, completely fiberless, and very sweet. Flavor is distinctive, often described as citrus-forward with notes of melon, honey, and mild spice, placing it firmly in the Indian flavor group but with a cleaner, less resinous profile than many classic Indian types. Acidity is low, contributing to a rich but smooth eating experience. The seed is monoembryonic.
Mallika is known for excellent eating quality when fully tree-ripened, but fruit picked too early can taste flat or starchy, making proper maturity critical. The trees are moderately vigorous, upright to spreading, and tend to produce late-season fruit. In many growing regions, Mallika ripens later than most mangos, often extending the season into late summer.
Commercial production is concentrated in India, particularly Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, though the variety has gained international attention among collectors and mango enthusiasts for its flavor rather than ease of production.
