Exotic Mango Relative
Mangifera odorata, also known as kuwini, kuini, or huani, is a unique mango native to Southeast Asia, notable for its strong, divisive aroma that can be detected from a distance. Believed to be a natural hybrid of Mangifera indica and Mangifera foetida, it has several regional forms and names.
The tree is medium to large, typically 10–15 m tall, with a rounded canopy and light foliage, often planted in agroforestry systems alongside bananas and vegetables. The fruit is 10–13 cm long, green to yellow-green when ripe, with fibrous orange-yellow flesh that combines sweet mango notes with savory, sulfurous undertones. The skin contains acrid compounds and must be peeled thickly.
Kuwini thrives in wet tropical climates where common mangoes struggle, making it important in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. It is used fresh and in pickles, chutneys, and traditional sweets like dodol, while the seeds can be processed into flour. Its unusual aroma and flavor make it a standout example of the diversity in mango genetics and taste.
