Originating from Merritt Island, Florida, Osteen was named after S.A. Osteen, whose property saw the first fruiting seedling in 1940. Likely a Haden descendant, the fruit is medium-to-large, oval-oblong, and develops a bright red color at maturity. Its yellow flesh is nearly fiberless with a smooth, medium-bodied classic mango flavor. The trees are moderately vigorous with spreading canopies and are known for heavy production. Osteen is a late-season variety that has found commercial success overseas, including Spain, while remaining a staple on Merritt Island.
