Likely introduced to the U.S. around 1900 via Cuba, the Philippine mango grown in Florida is a Carabao-type, the most widely cultivated variety in the Philippines. It is a small, sigmoid-oblong fruit that turns solid yellow when ripe. The flesh is soft, fiberless, and offers a tropical-sweet Indochinese flavor, typical of Saigon-style mangos. While modest in size compared to its larger Philippine counterparts, the flavor remains vibrant and highly enjoyable.
This variety shows excellent resistance to anthracnose, as well as good tolerance to bacterial spot and rot, making it a strong choice for humid climates and areas with higher disease pressure. The trees are vigorous, vertical growers with a slow start to flowering, often taking several years to bloom. Despite a reputation for alternate bearing in the Philippines, they have generally produced consistently in Florida. Philippine is an early-season mango, maturing from May through July.
