Selected from Gary Zill’s breeding program in Boynton Beach, Florida, Phoenix is a ‘Jakarta’ seedling (planting #C-26) named for its resilience.The fruit is medium-sized, round, and often develops red or orange highlights at maturity. Its yellow-orange flesh is firm, fiberless, and contains a monoembryonic seed.
Phoenix’s flavor sits between classic and Indian profiles, combining rich sweetness with a noticeable subacid tang and subtle resinous notes, making it one of the most elite-flavored newer mango varieties.
The trees are vigorous, upright growers with open canopies and produce reliable crops in South Florida. While the fruit demonstrates good resistance to bacterial black spot, flowers are highly susceptible to anthracnose and powdery mildew, so proper management is key for consistent production.
