Developed from Gary Zill’s breeding program as a cross between the Dot and Gary mangoes, Pina Colada is prized for its exceptionally rich flavor. The fruit is small, typically under 8 ounces, with a shape reminiscent of Fairchild. The flesh-to-seed ratio is low, as the seed is relatively large. At maturity, the skin transitions from green to light yellow, revealing fiberless, bright yellow flesh with a pronounced tropical sweetness that evokes the flavor of its namesake cocktail when fully ripe. The seed is polyembryonic.
The trees exhibit low vigor with a spreading, open canopy and thin leaves. Production is generally light, and trees can be prone to disease in inland areas, though they fruit more reliably near coastal conditions. Despite its smaller size and modest yields, the Pina Colada mango stands out for its unique, indulgent flavor.
