This variety hails from Cuba, with its Spanish name meaning “black.” The fruit is small and ovate, often retaining a green hue even at full maturity. The flesh is orange, moderately fibrous, and remarkably sweet, placing it among the top classic-flavored mangoes despite its modest exterior. The seed is polyembryonic.
Prieto trees are slow-growing yet very manageable, with a vertical growth habit. They flower readily in South Florida and have proven reasonably productive. While the fruit is generally resistant to bacterial black spot, it can develop anthracnose spotting post-harvest, which affects appearance but not taste.
