Originating from Brazil, where it is grown extensively, Rosa is notable for being one of the earliest maturing varieties in Florida, often producing fruit in spring. The trees are highly responsive to weather changes and flower readily.
The fruit is ovate, developing a striking pink-red blush well before fully ripe. The flesh is firm, slightly fibrous, and yellow, with a polyembryonic seed. Rosa’s flavor is intense and aromatic, with strong resinous notes, rich turpenes, and moderate sweetness, reflecting its Indian-West Indian heritage.
Trees are very slow-growing and compact, making them highly manageable and essentially dwarf in habit. They are highly susceptible to anthracnose, so Rosa is best suited to coastal regions. Fruits are also somewhat prone to Neofusicoccum rotting fungi, which may impact yields. Rosa typically produces two crops: a main season from March to April and a secondary crop from June to July.
