Royal Special is an Indian mango cultivar also known locally as Punasa. It is valued less as a dessert mango and more for its versatility, particularly in its immature stage.
The fruit are small and round, remaining largely green to yellow even at full maturity. In India, Royal Special is most commonly harvested green and used for pickles, chutneys, and other culinary applications. When allowed to fully ripen, it develops a pleasant, classic mango flavor with moderate fiber. The seed is monoembryonic.
One of Royal Special’s standout traits is its ability to produce multiple crops throughout the year in India, including off-season fruiting. This reliable and repeat flowering habit has led to its promotion for ultra-high-density plantings, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, where productivity and canopy control are key priorities.
While not a showy dessert mango, Royal Special excels as a functional, productive cultivar with strong utility in culinary use and intensive growing systems.
