Selected in 1948 by Ed. P. Davis, a Miami grower, Ruby is believed to be a Haden seedling, typical of Florida selections from that era. (It should not be confused with ‘Fairchild Ruby’, which refers to the Zill J-12 variety.) True to its name, Ruby develops a striking red blush over a yellow background, sometimes even appearing fully red at maturity.
The fruit is small, generally under a pound, with an oval-ovate shape. The flesh is yellow, medium-firm, nearly fiberless, and contains a monoembryonic seed. Flavor is classic Florida—mild, sweet, and comparable to Haden or Irwin.
Trees are low-to-medium in vigor with a spreading canopy and show good anthracnose tolerance. Ruby has fruited well even in fungal-prone areas. The variety is mid-season in South Florida, typically ripening from late June through July, and shows only moderate susceptibility to bacterial spot and rot fungi.
