Originating from South India, Rumani is a commercially important cultivar there and is well known for its distinctive round, apple-like fruit shape, reminiscent of the Florida cultivar ‘Cushman’.
The fruit ripen to a uniform yellow and are small to medium in size. Flesh is light yellow, firm, completely fiberless, and surrounds a relatively small monoembryonic seed. Flavor is rich and notably sweet, firmly within the classic flavor group, with a depth that can be loosely compared to ‘Edward’. It’s an enjoyable mango that leans traditional rather than exotic.
Trees have a compact yet spreading growth habit with a dense canopy.
Flowering is strong, producing full white inflorescences, with fruit often setting at the distal ends of panicles. In India, Rumani is considered a late-season mango and a heavy producer. Under Florida conditions, however, it behaves more like a mid-season variety, typically ripening around July.
Despite good production, Rumani has shown a tendency toward bacterial black spot and fruit rot in our climate, which may limit its suitability for wetter or more disease-prone locations.
