Ryan is a Florida selection originating in Miami and was selected by Frank Smathers of Four Fillies Farm in Coral Gables. Smathers named the variety after one of his grandchildren, giving this mango both historical and personal significance within Florida mango breeding.
The fruit are medium-sized and oval in shape, turning yellow at maturity. The flesh is yellow, completely fiberless, and contains a monoembryonic seed. Flavor-wise, Ryan falls into the Indian–Alphonso class, showing similarities to Carrie and Edward. It is not as intensely flavored as Carrie, which we believe works in its favor, as the milder richness tends to have broader appeal among customers.
The tree itself is a slow, compact grower with a spreading habit and dense canopy. It can, however, be prone to post-harvest anthracnose on the fruit, so careful handling is advised.
