Originating from South Africa, where it has been widely used as a rootstock. It is also utilized for rootstock purposes in other countries due to its influence on tree vigor, with reports indicating it can dwarf certain cultivars while increasing vigor in others.
The fruit are small to medium in size, oblong in shape, and develop an attractive pink-toned skin. The flesh is very fibrous and generally regarded as low in eating quality, with a rather neutral to unappealing flavor. The seed is polyembryonic, making it suitable for seed propagation when used as rootstock.
Sabre trees are strong growers and productive, and the variety performs as an early-season mango in Florida conditions, typically fruiting reliably. While the fruit itself is not considered desirable for fresh consumption, Sabre’s primary value lies in its role as a rootstock rather than as a dessert mango.
