Saigon is a historic mango name applied to a shipment of seeds sent to Florida from what was then French Indochina by David Fairchild in 1902. Many early Florida plantings trace back to these introductions, making Saigon one of the foundational mango types in the state’s early mango history.

The Saigon selection associated with Fairchild Farm is believed to be directly descended from Fairchild’s original tree. This form produces medium-to-large, oblong fruit that ripen to a light greenish-yellow color. The flesh is pale yellow, completely fiberless, and carries a pleasant Indochinese-hybrid flavor profile that is mildly sweet, clean, and aromatic.

Because Saigon is polyembryonic, it was commonly grown from seed in the early 20th century, leading to noticeable variation among seedling trees. Some Saigon seedlings produce smaller fruit, different shapes, or develop pink or red blush, while others remain more uniformly green-yellow.

Fairchild’s original Saigon selection is notably compact and dwarfish, with strong precocity and reliable flowering. It has demonstrated good performance in humid environments such as Homestead, Florida, suggesting suitability for both coastal and interior growing regions. Disease resistance has generally been very good for this cultivar.
