San Felipe is a mango of Cuban origin, believed to come from western Cuba, and it is also grown in parts of South Florida. It is a visually striking variety, producing large fruit that commonly weigh around 20 ounces. The skin ripens to a bright yellow and is often overlaid with an apple-red blush, frequently accented by small white lenticels that give the fruit a distinctive appearance.
The flesh is aromatic and intensely sweet, placing San Felipe firmly in the classic mango flavor group. Its eating quality has drawn frequent comparisons to Haden, both in flavor profile and overall presentation. Trees are vigorous growers and tend to produce reliably once established, making it a solid performer where conditions are favorable.
Despite its attribution to Cuba, San Felipe is something of an oddity there, as many Cuban growers and consumers are reportedly unfamiliar with it. This has led to speculation that the variety may have been more widely propagated or preserved outside of its original region.
