Simmonds is a historic Florida mango developed during a hybridization project led by Edward Simmonds in Miami in the 1920s. It resulted from a deliberate cross between Haden and a Philippine (Carabao-type) mango, part of Simmonds’ broader effort to blend the rich eating quality of Indian-derived mangos with the superior disease resistance of Southeast Asian types. Early references to this mango appear in the notes of David Fairchild in the early 1930s. After Simmonds’ death, David Sturrock preserved the cultivar by rescuing budwood, grafting it, and formally describing it under the name Simmonds.

The fruit are ovate in shape and ripen to yellow with light red or pink coloration when exposed to sun. Flesh color is yellow, firm, and completely fiberless, surrounding a small polyembryonic seed. Flavor quality is very good, combining Philippine-Carabao character with a noticeable classic-acid component that produces a clean orange-citrus impression.

The tree is known for strong flowering and heavy fruit set, along with excellent resistance to anthracnose. However, the fruit are notably susceptible to Neofusicoccum and Phomopsis rot fungi, which has limited its reliability and likely contributed to its lack of commercial adoption. Unlike its more famous sibling, Edward, Simmonds was never widely propagated, and only a small number of trees remain in South Florida today.

Growth habit is moderately vigorous with a spreading, open canopy. The foliage is distinctive, with thick, broad leaves reminiscent of Mangifera lalijiwa. Simmonds ripens mid-season in Florida, typically from late June through July.
