Hawaiian Smith is a mango cultivar originating from Hawaii. Its exact identity remains somewhat unclear, as it may be related to—but is not confirmed to be synonymous with—either ‘Smith-Haden’ or ‘Smith-Wooten,’ two distinct Hawaiian cultivars. It is definitively separate from the Florida-grown ‘Smith’ cultivar that is produced commercially in Bokeelia, Florida.
The tree exhibits strong precocity, flowering readily, while maintaining a very slow growth rate that gives it an almost dwarf-like stature. This compact habit makes it notably smaller than many classic Florida mango cultivars.
The fruit are small to medium in size and oval in shape, developing an attractive deep crimson-red blush at maturity. The flesh is orange, completely fiberless, and contains an exceptionally thin seed. The flavor falls squarely within the classic group and is comparable to varieties such as Bailey’s Marvel, Maya, and Ah Ping, offering a balanced, mild-to-medium-bodied eating experience.
Hawaiian Smith appears to mature early to mid-season under south Florida conditions.
