Sophie Frey is an old Florida mango selected by the Zill family in Delray Beach many decades ago. It was a seedling of Julie and was named in honor of Laurence Zill’s grandmother. Historically, Sophie Frey is best known as the maternal parent of the famous Carrie mango, making it an important but now very rare part of Florida mango history. Only a small number of trees are believed to still exist in the state.
The fruit are small, oval, and yellow at maturity, closely resembling Julie in appearance. The flesh is yellow with only scant fiber and delivers a rich Indian–Alphonso style flavor marked by pronounced spice and aromatic depth. The seed is monoembryonic. Reports and limited observation suggest the fruit has respectable disease resistance compared to other Julie-type descendants.
Trees grow with moderate vigor and develop a spreading habit with a dense canopy. Once established, they are capable of regular production, though the cultivar has never been widely planted.
