Spirit of ’76 is a Florida mango selected in south Florida by the Zill family of Boynton Beach. It is believed to be a natural cross between Haden and Zill, a pairing that places it firmly in the traditional Florida mango lineage. The cultivar earned its patriotic name after the original tree first fruited in 1976, the year of the United States bicentennial.
The fruit is known for a clean, classic flavor profile, often described with pleasant peach and nectarine notes rather than heavy resin or spice. The flesh is completely fiberless, smooth, and easy to eat, reflecting the refined eating quality that made many early Florida mangos popular. Spirit of ’76 is best appreciated as a straightforward, old-school mango that highlights balance and familiarity rather than intensity or novelty.
