Sugarloaf (E-4) originated as an Edward seedling from the breeding work of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida. Either Gary or Pettigrew is believed to be the pollen parent, with Pettigrew considered the more likely candidate based on observed growth and fruit traits.
The fruit are unconventional in appearance—obliquely oval, somewhat misshapen, and greenish-yellow at maturity. While visually unremarkable, the eating quality is anything but. The flesh is pale yellow, very soft, completely fiberless, and may ripen unevenly. When slightly underripe, the flavor shows bright pineapple notes; at fuller ripeness it transforms dramatically into an intense coconut-forward profile with rich dessert sweetness, often compared to the filling of a coconut candy bar. The seed is polyembryonic and frequently aborts within the husk.
Trees exhibit low-to-moderate vigor with a spreading, open canopy. Flowering often occurs multiple times during winter, and young trees tend to produce a high percentage of male flowers, a trait that typically moderates as the tree matures.
In 2018, Gary Zill officially named this selection Sugarloaf, a nod to its pineapple-like flavor and resemblance to Sugar Loaf pineapple in taste character.
