Sunrise is a mango developed in the breeding program of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida, and originated as a seedling of the Jakarta mango (planting #25-28).
The fruit are medium-sized and oval in shape, maturing to a yellow-orange color over a green background. The flesh is yellow, firm, completely fiberless, and contains a monoembryonic seed. Flavor is bold and expressive, marked by rich sweetness, resin, and layered spice notes. It closely resembles Jakarta and Bombay in profile and fits squarely within the Indian/West Indian flavor group, offering one of the stronger expressions of that style.
Trees are highly vigorous with upright growth and dense canopy structure. Sunrise has shown solid anthracnose tolerance and has demonstrated an ability to fruit under humid conditions, making it a potential alternative for growers interested in Jakarta-type flavors but concerned about disease pressure.
In Florida, Sunrise is a mid-season mango, typically ripening from late June through July.
