Super Alphonso is a Florida mango originating from the breeding program of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach. It was originally labeled as selection 36-8 and first circulated under the name India’s Gift before eventually settling on Super Alphonso. Genetically, it is a seedling of Zill-80, with Jakarta suspected as the pollen parent. Despite the name, it is not a true Alphonso-type mango and does not mirror Alphonso’s flavor profile.
The fruit is round, closely resembling its Zill-80 parent in shape, and develops a rich, high-quality eating experience when handled correctly. Tree-ripened fruit tend to perform poorly, but when harvested mature-green and allowed to ripen off the tree over 7–10 days, the quality improves dramatically. At peak ripeness, the flesh delivers a refined classic-acidic flavor with added depth and subtle Indian spice notes, often regarded as superior to Zill-80 itself.
Trees are known for consistent and heavy production, a trait that sets Super Alphonso apart from many intensely flavored cultivars with weaker yields. Its long-term commercial potential remains tied to how well it performs against newer disease pressures in humid subtropical climates, particularly in south Florida.
