Ugly Betty is a seedling of Carrie from the breeding program of Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida (planting #7-20). It is best known for its excellent eating quality paired with a distinctly unattractive appearance—hence the name.
The fruit are oval to ovate with a very uneven, bumpy surface. Skin color at maturity is light green to yellow, often with a mottled pink blush. Internally, the flesh is yellow, extremely soft, and completely fiberless, containing a monoembryonic seed. Flavor is very good and closely resembles Carrie, with strong spice notes, a touch of resin, and rich sweetness, placing it firmly in the Indian–Alphonso flavor group.
Trees tend to have a more vertical growth habit and are often described as slow or stagnant growers. Production has generally been light to unimpressive across multiple observed trees, suggesting yield is a consistent weakness of the cultivar.
One redeeming trait is its ability to set fruit in marginal or more humid growing areas, indicating at least moderate anthracnose tolerance, particularly compared to other Carrie descendants.
Ugly Betty is a mid-season mango in Florida, typically ripening in July.
