This mango is the form of Himsagar maintained in the USDA collection and subsequently propagated to a limited extent in south Florida. It is not the same mango commonly known as Himsagar from West Bengal and Bangladesh, which produces a round fruit similar in shape to Kent or Haden.

To distinguish it, this selection has often been referred to as “Lahore Himsagar,” based on historical notes indicating that budwood was sent to the USDA from Lahore, Pakistan in the early 1960s along with several other cultivars. That said, some uncertainty remains as to whether the mango currently distributed under the USDA “Himsagar” name is truly identical to the original Pakistani introduction, as a labeling or identity mix-up may have occurred at some point.

Regardless of its exact origin, this mango stands out on merit. The fruit are medium-sized, slightly oblong, and yellow at maturity. The flesh is fiberless, rich, and very sweet, placing it squarely in the classic flavor group. Eating quality is excellent. The seed is monoembryonic.

Trees are precocious and notably productive even in large containers, an uncommon and valuable trait. It behaves as a late-season mango in Florida and has shown enough consistency and quality to warrant serious consideration for growers seeking reliable mid-to-late season options. Trees grafted by Zill High Performance Plants under the name Himsagar correspond to this selection.
