USDA Langra Benarasi is a mango maintained in the USDA collection and grown in Florida under that name, but it should not be confused with the famous Langra mango widely cultivated in north and central India. Despite sharing a similar name, this Florida-grown selection is genetically and horticulturally distinct, and its exact origin remains uncertain.
The fruit are medium-sized and round, developing a pronounced red blush over much of the skin at maturity. The flesh is yellow, with very light fiber, and offers a rich, sweet classic mango flavor accented by a mild resinous finish and subtle melon-like notes. Shelf life is short, and fruit are best harvested mature green and ripened off the tree, as tree-ripened fruit can soften and overripen quickly. The seed is monoembryonic. Production is typically average to good.
Trees are very vigorous, forming a dense, spreading canopy, and require space and regular management.
From a disease standpoint, the fruit show moderate to high susceptibility to bacterial black spot and rot fungi, and the variety is also anthracnose prone, making it poorly suited to humid interior locations. Performance is more acceptable in coastal south Florida and it may be better adapted to drier climates such as southern California.
