This mango is one of several Saigon seedling hybrids developed and maintained by the USDA in Miami, each identified by an “S” numerical designation. S-1 originated as a seedling of USDA accession MIA 4329, which itself traces back to a seedling of the original Saigon mango introduced to Florida around 1904. As such, S-1 represents a later-generation selection within the Saigon lineage.
The fruit are medium-sized, oval to oblong in shape, and turn yellow at maturity. The flesh is light yellow, contains very little fiber, and has a mild Indochinese-hybrid flavor comparable to Florigon clean, gently sweet, and easy-eating rather than intense. The fruit have demonstrated excellent disease resistance, a notable strength of this selection.
Trees exhibit low-to-moderate vigor with a spreading growth habit and open canopy, making them relatively manageable compared to many older Florida cultivars. Production appears consistent once established.
S-1 is an early to mid-season mango in South Florida, typically ripening from June through July.
