Valencia Pride is a classic Florida mango that traces back to a Haden seedling planted in Miami in 1937, with first fruit recorded in 1941. It quickly gained attention for its combination of size, appearance, and dependable production, leading to widespread propagation beginning in the 1940s. Over time, it became one of the most familiar backyard mango trees in South Florida.
The fruit are very large, broad, and oblong-sigmoid in shape. Skin color develops early, showing a yellow base with an attractive pink to red blush over much of the surface well before full maturity. The flesh is light yellow, firm, and contains only a small amount of fiber, surrounding a monoembryonic seed. Flavor falls squarely in the classic Florida mango group, offering moderate sweetness with subtle honey and stone-fruit notes. Sugar levels can fluctuate noticeably depending on season and growing conditions.
Trees are known for rapid, vigorous growth with a strong vertical habit and open canopy. Without regular training and restraint in fertilization, they can become extremely large. For this reason, Valencia Pride is poorly suited to small yards but excels as a shade-producing landscape tree.
Disease resistance is one of its strengths, with very good tolerance to anthracnose, allowing reliable fruiting even in humid interior areas of South Florida. Some trees may show alternate bearing tendencies, and fruit can occasionally split on the tree following periods of heavy rain.
Valencia Pride is considered a mid to late season mango, typically ripening from late June through August.
